A WORD FOR TODAY

JESUS, THE WAY TO ETERNAL LIFE

_"Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me." (John 14:5-6)_

If you embark on a journey in this 21st century without making an enquiry about where you are going to and also google a possible gprs direction in the map, you will definitely embark on your journey no doubt, but you may get lost along the way and may not arrive your destination.

We are on this earth as pilgrims and in this journey of going to heaven we need to follow the true way and the right path if we intend to arrive our final destination which is heaven. Jesus tells us in the gospel reading today that He is the way, and the truth and the life and that no one can come to the Father except by Him. This simply means that we already have the answer to any question we may raise about life. If you want to make heaven, you must follow Jesus, because He is the way to heaven where the Father dwells.

Jesus gives us hope in the gospel reading not to lose heart as a result of the vicissitudes of life, He says, "Let not your hearts be troubled" This is an assurance that so long as we are with Him, we have nothing to worry, for He is the captain of the ship, but we must keep believing in Him, because He has gone to prepare a place for us. However, He will come back to take us so that we will be with Him in heaven. He is the way to life and not just any kind of life but abundant and eternal life (John 10:10).

There are many ways in this life offered by many people as the way to survival, and most of these ways seems right unto men, but the end is death.(Proverbs 14:12) Sometimes they focus on life in this world and forget that this world and everything in it is passing away. Jesus is the way not just to this physical and mortal life, but more importantly, to eternal life. Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.(John 8:12)

The apostles in the first reading of today recognized the need to continue to proclaim Christ the Way, the truth and the life without any distraction and they quickly resolved the issue that came up among them with regard to the distribution of food, a complain brought by the Hellenists against the Hebrews. This made the word of God to increase and many disciples were added to their number. When you know Jesus the way, the truth and the life, you will have the wisdom to handle issues when they present themselves to you and you will be just and sincere in your decisions.

St. Peter reminds us in the second reading of today to come to the Lord, that living stone rejected by men, but in God's sight chosen and precious. We must come to Jesus the way and follow Him so that we may gain eternal life. He is the truth that will guide us to live well for God in this life. If we believe in Him, we shall become a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and God's own people who will declare His wonderful deeds everywhere.

Jesus is the way to eternal life and whoever follows Him will not be lost. We need to ask Him to teach us everyday to follow Him as the Way (Psalm 27:11) so that we may actualize our set goals in this life. Following Jesus as the Way gives us peace and serenity, because we know that He will never lead us astray, but will bring us to our heavenly home on the last day.

Jesus is the Way to joy, peace, mercy, forgiveness, breakthrough, upiftment, healing, restoration, eternal salvation, spiritual growth and everything good in this life and in the life to come. Therefore, follow Him and you will have all these and so much more come to you.
