A WORD FOR TODAY

SELFLESSNESS OVER SELFISHNESS

It is easier to desire to have things done for you than to have you do something for others. Sometimes we tend to be selfish to the point that we do not even remember that any other person exist except us. However, the best life is that which is lived in Christ dying for others on a regular basis.

We see in the gospel reading of today how Jesus was telling His disciples of the things He was going to suffer on His way to Calvary, one would expect that they will all be sober and give Him the desired support He needs, but that was not to be the case, because James and John were busy plotting on how to secure their positions in God's kingdom. They wanted to make sure that they had the best of place, but their request was out of place.

This is shown by the response that Jesus gave to them. He said, "you do not know what you are asking" Their request was born out of selfishness and such desire can never be pleasing in the eyes of the Lord. If we are going to do things that the Lord will accept and be pleased with, it must be done with a selfless and not selfish intentions.

Selfishness will make you only think about yourself and what will bring you good. You will never put others in your plan and if there is something that will benefit them you will quickly take it to yourself and exclude them from being part of it.

Selfishness and greediness have a link and this is what makes a member of a parliament to use the money budgeted for constituency project, for his personal need while the people who are supposed to benefit from that project will continue to suffer. We can multiply the examples as it affects us in our own area of work or assignments.

We must learn from Jesus to be selfless and to consider others in what we do. We must love ourselves, yes, but we must not let that love for self make us forget to love others as we love ourselves and not less as we love ourselves. It is only in this way that we can claim to be friends with Jesus. To be selfless is to be servant of all and to be the servant of all is to be like Jesus who came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
