A WORD FOR TODAY

WHAT THEN SHALL WE DO

_"Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."_(Acts 2:37-38)

In the first reading of today we see how the witnessing of Peter on the day of Pentecost about our Lord Jesus Christ touched all those who listened to him and they asked him a very fundamental question which requires a direct answer.

They said to him, "What shall we do" and he told them, "Repent and be baptised" every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. They were touched by the message they heard and they gave their lives to Jesus.

When we recognise Jesus as Mary did in the gospel reading we will be moved to do what He wants us to do. She was sorrowful and sad when she came to the tomb and there were tears in her eyes, but as soon as she recognized Jesus at the mention of her name, her tears ceased and her joy was restored. She now received the great commission to go and tell the other disciples that Jesus is risen. These men in the first reading recognized their need for Jesus after Peter's preaching and they gave their lives to Him. They were baptised and they became instruments of evangelization in His hand just as Peter, through whom they came to know Jesus.

We must recognize where we have fallen and made mistakes, we must rise and seek Jesus who will help us get better and then make ourselves available to Him to use us to win more souls into His kingdom. Repentance is the key. We must rise to become better people and to let Jesus use us as He pleases. We must aim to become good, stay away from evil, be the light and not darkness and proclaim the Good News everywhere.
