A WORD FOR TODAY

Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. It is a holy day of obligation and one of the feaats in the Church which honours her for her role in our salvation history. Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950 proclaimed as a dogma of faith in the apostolic constitution "Munificentissimus Deus" that 'the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory'

This feast reminds us that we have come from God and at the end of our earthly existence we must return to Him to give account of our stewardship. Our Mother Mary from the time of her birth was favoured with God's grace and favour and given the privilege to be the mother of Jesus. she lived a holy and inspiring life and when her mission was completed the Lord also gave her the privilege not to let her body taste the corruption of this earth, but it was assumed into heaven where she reigns as the queen.

We may not be assumed as she was when we die, but if we die in Christ we must definitely share in His resurrection. He conquered death on the cross and through His resurrection from the dead He has given us the power of victory over death, therefore, to be in Christ is to have a new life and if we live in Him and die in Him, we shall be with Him in heaven.

Our Mother Mary was faithful to God and lived out in her life the commandments of God. She never compromised her faith in God, but through holy living became an inspiring example to all those who looked up to her. God honoured her, because she served Him well. We will be honoured by God if we devote our time and energy in this life to serve Him and to live a holy life which will help us to have access to His kingdom on the last day.

We are children of Mary and we must learn from her to humble ourselves and serve the lord well here on earth so that when the Lord calls us back we shall return to Him with joy and we shall sing a song of joy as the Blessed Virgin Mary sang the magnificat.

We must honour her by living out on a daily basis the tenets of our faith. We must be peaceful, loving, generous, selfless and forgiving people. We must pray our Rosary daily and keep doing good in the name of God so that when we die, we will be able to see Jesus face to face and live with Him forever.

May Jesus through the intercession of our Mother Mary grant you the grace to live a good life that will help you to make heaven on the last day. Amen. *And may the Almighty God bless you: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Pray your Rosary everyday, honour the Blessed Blessed Virgin Mary and learn from her the virtues that will help you to live well here on earth, so as to be with God in heaven on the last day.
