A WORD FOR TODAY

JESUS CAME TO CALL SINNERS TO REPENTANCE

"But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”(Matthew 9:12-13)_

Today we celebrate the feast of saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. He was a tax collector and was seen by the world as a public sinner, but Jesus called Him and gave him opportunity to find salvation and also become a vessel and channel through which others will come to know Him.

God's love was shown to Matthew and when He opened his heart and accepted Jesus invitation to follow Him, he was saved and he became a vessel of honour for the Lord.

Every day we receive Jesus' call to repentance and we are expected to listen to Him and repent so as to receive eternal life. We are sinners and unworthy, but if we draw closer to Jesus as saint Matthew did, we shall be saved.

Matthew was called so that he will help to call others to God through the Good News. God chose him and he became a veritable tool in the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ in winning souls to Him. He put his gifts into good use and through him other tax collectors came to meet Jesus.

If we refuse to answer God's call, our minds and heart will be occupied by other things that will not allow us to follow the way of God and we will be lost. However, Jesus came to call sinners to repentance and He is calling us to come to Him, to follow Him and when we have been saved we shall become a channel through which He will win more souls into His kingdom.

Let us be moved by the voice of Jesus that speaks in our conscience every day and make amends and also use our platform to propagate the Good News for the salvation of souls. We must let go of our sinful life and accept the new life that Jesus is giving us and we shall be saved.

When God calls, we must listen to Him and follow Him because He will save us and give us life.
