A WORD FOR TODAY

OPEN MY EYES THAT I MAY SEE, O LORD

When you make decisions based on appearance, you are bound to make mistakes, but if your decisions come from a heart that has been enlightened, you will definitely do the right thing and in the end you will be happy.

In this fourth Sunday of Lent, known as the laetare Sunday, (Sunday of Joy). The prophet Samuel was instructed by the lord to go and anoint David as king as we have recorded in the first reading of today, he tried to anoint Eliab based on his physical appearance, but the Lord told him not to look on the appearance, because that is not the way that God makes His choice. God looks in the heart and not on the outward appearance.

We must strive to grow in the spirit and in the things of God so that we may perceive and understand what the Lord wants us to know. If we continue to think only of the material and focus our minds on the things of this world, we will never be able to perceive the things of the Spirit. And this will simply be tagged: spiritual blindness.

God needed to touch Samuel and open his eyes so that he could see what is real and not dwell on what is not important. As soon as he realised that he was on the wrong track, he retraced his step and did the right thing.

Saint Paul tells us in the second reading to walk as children of the light and we should strive not to entertain works of darkness, but to expose them. In Christ we are no longer darkness, we must remain in the light and let the world see through our light.

In the gospel reading, Jesus opened the eyes of the man born blind and he could see again and believed in the Messiah after that encounter. The pharisees can see physically, but spiritually they were blind and could not recognize that Jesus is the Messiah.

We must learn to ask the the Lord to open our eyes so that we could see and recognize Him and also believe in Him. It is by doing so that we will come to possess eternal life on the last day. We must be humble to acknowledge that we are sinful and then ask Jesus to help us change and become holy again.

Do not continue to be in darkness when you have Jesus who will open your eyes. Rise and come to Him and you will see again.
