A WORD FOR TODAY

CREATE A QUALITY TIME TO BE WITH GOD

"But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.”(Luke 10:41-42)

The reality of life is that sometimes we become so busy with our work and activities and we no longer have time to be with God and draw near to Him to hear His word and feed on the Good News to nourish our soul. To work hard in life is definitely recommended and it is something that God expects of us, but when working hard interferes in our relationship with God, it becomes a bad thing.

For any man or woman of faith, God is always our priority above everyother thing that may make demands of our attention and time; family, business, studies, work, projects e.t.c. All of these are good in themselves and we must devote our time in pursuit of them, but it must never be the reason why we will no longer have time to be with God.

Today we celebrate the memorial of saint Martha, a disciple of Jesus and a sister to Mary and Lazarus. We see how in the gospel reading she devoted her time in showing hospitality to Jesus, but was so busy that she could not hear what Jesus had to say. What she was doing was good, but was not needed at that time. We must learn to do the right thing at the right time and also not be too busy with our work and then forget the owner of the work.

Being a friend of Jesus begins with the quality of the time we create to be with Him. If we fail to create time to be with God, we will become so busy with the things of this life and in the end we will realise that they are all emptiness and vanity. Anything we do in life and take God away from it, will not bring us the ultimate satisfaction and joy we need because God is our beginning and end and the source of our happiness.

We must learn from the gospel reading of today to create time from our schedule to be alone with God and to hear Him speak to us words that will give us life, energy and motivation to keep on working hard. We must never allow the things we do stop us from creating time to pray, go to Church, attend our devotions and do the work of God. We must create a balance in our life between our work and the practice of our faith, non should suffer as a result of the other. We must have quality time for God and also good time to do our work and business.

Without God, you are absolutely nothing. Therefore, spend a quality time with Him and He will give you the power to conquer all things that come your way.
