A WORD FOR TODAY*

STRIVE TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT ALWAYS

_"And Jesus answered, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him. And he said to them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath.”_

_*Human laws, traditions and religious practices and rules are good and should derive from the divine law. However, when this is not the case, there is bound to be a problem. The laws will become draconian in nature and will no longer serve the good purpose for which it was made.*_

_The Pharisees made laws for the people and they are always on the look out to see those who will break the law. That the disciples of Jesus plucked the ears of corn in the field was not an offence in itself, but the real issue is that it was done on a sabbath. They were not happy with Jesus and his disciples and they confronted him. However, Jesus used the opportunity to tell them that any law that is made must be for the good of man and not to burden him. The need of man must come first before any law._

_*You cannot refuse to save a life or help a brother or sister who is hungry or thirsty because it is a Sabbath. We must be like Jesus who is the Lord of the Sabbath. We must constantly strive to do what is right irrespective of what the law of the land says. Our yardstick should always be to follow God's law of love in dealing with people. If we obey his commands, then we are good and will not be worried about what the people say.*_

_Jesus knew the law, but He places priority on the good of the human person over what the law says. He is merciful and kind and will not close His eyes to the needs of His people, because He wants to respect the law of the land and not breach it._

_*Obviously the Pharisees must have read what David did in the old testament, but they chose not to understand what it meant and they were on the look out to find reasons why they should attack and castigate our Lord Jesus Christ and His disciples.*_

_We must learn from Jesus to read the Scripture with an open mind in order to understand what it is really teaching us. This will help us to act in a manner that brings good to others and not cause them harm. Love of God and neighbour is supreme and must come first over any man made laws and religious practices. Therefore, strive always to do what is right and pleasing to God and you will be acceptable before Him even if the world hates you._

*Always consider the good of the other over and above every law you make in this life. If it is not good for man, then it should not be a law.*
