A WORD FOR TODAY

Stephen did nothing to the people who bore false witness against him. The only thing he did was that he witnessed for Christ. they told a lot of lies against him in order to destroy him, but he did not give up, rather he continued witnessing even to the point of death. We should learn from Stephen not to seek revenge when we face persecution for the sake of Christ, but to continue to put our trust in God for He will save us.

Stephen sought the Lord with all his heart and he lived for Him who chose him to be His disciple. We should learn to seek the Lord not only because of what we will get from Him to satisfy our needs, but more importantly because of who He is. He is a God worthy to be known, loved and served and to seek Him for who He is the best thing to do at all times.

The people who sought for Jesus in the gospel reading of today sought for Him because of the food that He provides, but He told them not to labour for food which perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life. This is important because we cannot please God if we are only concerned about earthly and material things and pay less attention to the spiritual things that will give us life.

We should learn to love God for who He is and to serve Him with zeal and commitment as saint Stephen did. We must love the spiritual food more than the physical. The Word of God and the Eucharist are food for our soul and we should always desire to have them more than the material things of this life which are all passing away.

Seek God for the right reasons and you will find Him. He is always available to those who seek Him with their hearts and who wish to grow in the Spirit. We can ask God to provide for our material needs and He can do it for us, but that should not be the primary reason why we come to Him. The Scripture says, 'Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and every other thing shall be added unto you'
