A WORD FOR TODAY

SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY: UNITY IN DIVERSITY

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.(2 Corinthians 13:14)_

Today the universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. It is a dogma and mystery of faith which we must accept and believe in because God has revealed Himself as such. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and life. It is a mystery of God in Himself. Therefore, it is the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them."(CCC 234)

The doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity came up in the fourth century through the efforts of saints Athanasius, Basil, Gregory Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa who responded to the heresy propounded by Arius that Jesus Christ was created and he is less than God, because He is not of one substance with the Father and is not co-eternal with Him. This crisis led to the convocation of the first council in the Church in Nicaea in A.D 325 and after their deliberations and condemnations of the teachings of Arius, formulated the Nicaean Creed which upholds the doctrine and belief in the three persons in one God and which we use during the celebration of the Sunday Mass._

God is one, but three distinct persons. The three persons that make up the God-head are not three different Gods, but three distinct persons in the one God-head. This is a mystery, but it is an indisputable truth. The person of the Father is not the person of the Son and the person of the Holy Spirit is neither the person of the Father nor the Son. However, we must accept the fact that God revealed Himself to us in these three-fold design, where we meet Him as God the Father who created and as God the Son who redeemed and also as God the Holy Spirit who stands as our advocate, teacher and helper.

The doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity affirms both 'unity of substance' and 'diversity of persons. They are unique in their personality, but they are united and relate with each other. Infact, the Father is in the Son and the Holy Spirit and the Son and the Holy Spirit are also in the Father. At Jesus' Baptism at the river Jordan, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him like the dove and the voice of the Father affirmed Him as the beloved Son.(Matthew 3:16-17) By virtue of our baptism also we have been launched into the mystery of the life of the Blessed Trinity. This is evident in the Trinitarian formula of baptism as recorded in (Matthew 28:19)

In the first reading of today from the book of Exodus, the Lord revealed himself to Moses as a God full of mercy, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. We must strive always to love God as He has loved us by sending His Son to come and die for us, and one of the ways to do it is to hearken to the advise of saint Paul in the second reading, we must agree with one another and live in peace and in that way the God of love and peace will come to live with us.

God is love and He loves us as the Father, He loves us as the Son and He loves us as the Holy Spirit. This is evident in the gospel reading of today where our Lord Jesus Christ came from the Father out of love to redeem us and show us the way to the Father. Therefore, the responsibility lies on us to learn from the Most Holy Trinity to love (John 3:16), to be united (John 10:30), to be generous,(Genesis 1:26), to live in peace (Matthew 5:9).

The unity between the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit is something we must imbibe in our lives. We come different backgrounds, culture and nations and we speak different languages, but in God we are one. We must eschew discrimination and avoid issues that will make us be divided. We should promote and work on those things that will make us to be united instead of those things that will tear us apart as a result of our hatred for one another. We are all created by God in love and we must strive to live in love for Him in this life so as to return to Him and live in love with Him in heaven.
