A WORD FOR TODAY

Today is regarded in the universal Church as the Good Shepherd Sunday. It is a day in which we are reminded in the liturgy that our Lord Jesus Christ takes care of us more than a shepherd takes care of His flock. He laid down His life for us and He is always around us to keep us safe from the wolves that come to snatch us away from Him.

It is also know as Vocation Sunday. A day set aside to pray for more vocation to the priesthood and religious life. We pray that God will send more labourers into His vineyard, those who will shepherd His flock just as Christ the Good Shepherd did and has continued to do for us.

The Good Shepherd knows His own and He laid down His life for His sheep. If we intend to be shepherds, it must be in the example of Jesus Himself who is the Good Shepherd. We must aim to be like Him and do the things He did as the Sherpherd of our soul.

We have a responsibility to hear the voice of the Shepherd and do whatever He commands us to do. He knows where the pasture is and He will not allow the wolves to eat us up. If we hearken to His voice and follow His lead we will definitely find the pasture that will nourish our soul.

We must strive everyday to give a listening ear to God and to go out without fear to proclaim His name. To listen to Him and do what He commands will bring us good, but to listen to other voices that have the mission to lead us astray will cause us pain.

We may experience tribulations while on earth as we follow Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd, but if we remain steadfast in following Him and in doing His will, we are going to be rewarded in the end with eternal life. Let our allegiance be to Jesus who takes care of us always, but more importantly we shall seek to be like Him 'the Good Shepherd' in words and deeds.

The Good Shepherd knows the way to life and if we intend to find life and pasture we must listen to His voice always.
