A WORD FOR TODAY

In everything we do, a time will come when we shall bid good bye to this earth. Our earthly mission must come to an end one day. However, it does not matter when it comes, but how successful we have been able to make use of the grace and opportunities given to us by God to do good that will make the world remember us when we are gone.

Moses today in the first reading bowed out from the scene, but his memory lives on. He was used by God mightily as a leader and prophet and he carried out his responsibility in a manner that inspired the people. What legacy are you leaving behind? What will you be remembered for when you are gone? This is the time to do good things of which you will be known for and cherished when your earthly existence will come to an end.

Joshua took over from Moses and he worked very hard because he learnt a lot from Moses and the Lord was with Him. We must also be ready to inspire and groom positively those who will take over from us when we are no more. We must not go to the grave with our knowledge and skills, pass it on and let others learn from you so that when you are no more they will continue from where you stopped and there will be no vacuum created as a result of your selfishness not to share your knowledge.

Great leaders make tremendous amount of sacrifice in order to carry the people along and to please the Lord. They go the extra mile to work for peace and unity among the people. They act in a manner that will unite the people and make them be obedient to God's law. They are great teachers who mentor others in the way of life and righteousness. They work for peace and reconciliation among brothers and sisters and lay down their lives as a ransom for others.

Today we celebrate the memorial of saint Maximilian Kolbe(1894-1941) who is well known all over the world for the sacrifice he made at the Nazi concentration camp to offer himself to be killed in place of another man who has a family to carter for. He laid down his life and through that act he won a place in God's kingdom in heaven.

We must learn from Him to always be ready to lay down our lives for the good of others. He died for another man just as Christ died for us and today his heroic martyrdom is being celebrated all over the world.

Make effort to win back your brother or sister when they offend you, go the extra mile as Jesus did for you and you will be remembered when you are gone.
