A WORD FOR TODAY 15 DECEMBER 2020
A WORD FOR TODAY
THE TIME TO REPENT AND CHANGE IS NOW
_“What do you think? A man had two sons; and he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not’; but afterward he repented and went."(Matthew 21:28-29)_
_*Repentance is a thing of the heart and when we repent and change, our relationship with God will be restored and we shall become happy and strong in faith as we serve our God.*_
_In the first reading the people of Israel were called to change from their rebellious and evil ways through the prophet Zephaniah. The essence of this change is for them to be accepted by the Lord and for things to go well for them._
_*Sin defiles us and make us to become rebels in the sight of God. We will no longer love the Lord and keep His commandments, but when we repent and turn away from our evil ways and put our trust in Him, we shall receive mercy and forgiveness and His blessings.*_
_This season of Advent is a time to repent and change our ways so that we shall be holy and worthy to welcome the Lord. It is a time to be obedient to God's words and to do what the Lord wants._
In the gospel reading we see Jesus tell the parable of the two sons. This is to tell the chief priests and elders who claim to know God, but they are very far from God's presence because of their disobedience to God's command, that they may end up not entering into God's kingdom, while they will watch those who were rooted in sin by their behaviour, but are now changing their evil ways and accepting the Good News of salvation to have access to God's kingdom.
_Jesus was neither praising the Jews nor the tax collectors, but giving us a message to be doers of the word and not just hearers only. If we have accepted Him, we must be ready and willing to do what He wants. We must learn to put into practice our promises. Our faith in God should not just end in lip service, we must strive to put into practice what we profess. Therefore, if we change our ways, we shall begin to love the Lord better and be willing and ready to obey Him at all times and we will indeed be happy._
