A WORD FOR TODAY

NEVER LOOK DOWN ON ANYONE

God created us and gave us different gifts and if we make use of it we are bound to be useful to Him and it is His will that we make use of our gifts for the good of humanity and to the glory of His name. When you look down on people, you may not be disposed to learn what you can from them or even get the help you can from them.

Naaman in the first reading of today almost lost out on the healing he came to seek from the land of Israel through the prophet Elisha, because he was not disposed to do what the prophet instructed him to do, which was to go and bathe in the river Jordan so as to be cured.

If he had continued to hold unto his status and make arguments about which river is clean and better, the one in Israel or the one in his hometown; he would have remained a leper until he dies.

Never look down on people, because the person you ignore and look down upon could be your saviour tomorrow. We must have a good disposition to be humble to learn from others even when we feel we know more than they know or have more than they have. There is something they can add to what we already know.

Jesus tells us in the gospel reading that the prophet has no honour in his hometown. This statement is true of Him because His people looked down on Him because they knew where He came from and His parents too and it made Him not to heal many persons among them.

We must not let anything stop us from recognizing in Jesus the One who can help us at all times. We must not look down on people because of where they come from or the language they speak, instead always be disposed to learn from people so as to grow yourself. You will be the loser if you block yoursef from learning from others because you do not see them as those who can add anything to your life.
