A WORD FOR TODAY

SET YOUR MIND ON THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT

In the first reading of today, Saint Paul tell us that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. This is true because if we are truly in Christ and belong to Him, we must detest sin and live a life in the spirit and not in the flesh. The flesh has nothing to offer us but weakness, pain and death, but the spirit offers us strength, joy, peace and life. If our mind is set on the flesh it will be difficult for us to obey God, but if it is set on the spirit we will submit to God and let Him reign in us.

Although sin came through one man and weakened us, the Lord through His Son our Lord Jesus Christ has set us free from the power of sin and death through His sacrifice on the cross of Calvary. All we need to conquer sin in our flesh is to let the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead to dwell in us and He will give life to our mortal bodies and help us to be pure and holy and pleasing to our God

We may fall into sin when we let our minds and hearts be lured away by the concupiscence of the flesh and the intent to love the world and everything in it more than God Himself. Sin breaks us apart and the end point is death. However, if we hearten to the voice of the Lord who calls us always and repent, we shall have eternal life and our relationship with the Lord will be restored. God is calling us to Himself and He gives us opportunity to turn away from our sinful life and live. If we return back to Him, we shall find eternal life, but if we abandon Him, we will be lost forever.

In the parable of the fig tree in the gospel reading of today, the lord reminds us that the second chance that the Father gives to us in life is not for us to continue to sin, but to repent. It is an opportunity of grace and mercy to turn away from our evil ways and find eternal life.

We have received so much from the Lord and He expects us to bear good fruits for Him, but when this is not the case as it is most times, it means that something is wrong and need to be fixed quickly, otherwise we will drift away from the Lord and become vessels of wickedness and sinfulness in the hands of the evil one. Therefore, if we do not make use of our time here to be useful to the Lord, after all He had put in us to be fruitful, we will simply attract disaster to ourselves.

God is giving us an opportunity to come back to Him and bear fruits of righteousness. We can only do this if we let His Spirit dwell in us. We must move away from the things that make us impure and contaminate us and attach ourselves to the Lord and to those who will help us to love Him and live a life that will bring glory to His name.

The Lord does not rejoice at the death of the wicked, but He wants them to repent. If we hear His voice and turn around we shall find forgiveness and mercy and life, but if we fail to repent, we shall likewise perish. Now is the time of salvation, now is the time to come back to the Lord. Wait no further and do not delay, because tomorrow may be too late.

God gives us a second chance and if we take it, we shall find mercy and forgiveness and be saved. Never reject God’s invitation or call to repentance.
