A WORD FOR TODAY

HIS DEATH BROUGHT US LIFE

The death of Jesus on the cross is something that happened in history and changed a lot for us. He did not die on the cross in vain, but was aware from the very beginning that it is through His death on the cross and His resurrection that we will find life and salvation. This was His mission from the very beginning and stayed through to it until the end.

In the gospel reading of this morning, people were marvelling at the works of Jesus, how he was able to cast our demons just by simply saying a word, but He did not waste time to tell them that His main focus was to go to Calvary and it is through the cross that true greatness will come. The idea of the Messiah by the disciples is entirely different from what the Lord Himself has come to do and that is why Jesus had to let them know that He will suffer and die, but through His suffering, death and resurrection, they will find life.

When Jesus was killed, even His disciples out of fear scattered, because they felt that He has been destroyed forever, but their fears disappeared when after three days in the tomb, He rose from the dead and destroyed the power of death forever. Chains were broken and those in captivity of sin and sickness were set free. He destroyed the powers of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of light where He reigns forever.

Just like the Lord promised the people of Isreal in the first reading of today to be a wall of fire round about them and the glory within them for He will dwell in their midst, In the same way the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ should give us confidence that He is with us and as a result of His presence, no harm will come upon us.

Jesus is with us as our Shepherd. He did not run away from the sufferings of the cross, but went through it because of the love He has for us. He gave Himself up to insults and torture in order to save us and win salvation for us. There is no need for us to be afraid anymore, but to stay close to Him and to continue to honour Him in the manner of life we live. We must be ready also to carry our cross and follow Him so that we will be like Him to all men and women of our time.

There is nothing the Lord cannot do for us if we put our trust in Him. We should not be afraid of anything in this life because the Lord has conquered it all. We must hold unto Him firmly and continue to tap into the blessings, freedom and salvation He has already gained for us through His death on the cross. He came that we may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10), therefore, we must choose Him above everyother thing in this world because He alone can give us what they cannot give us, that is, eternal life and everlasting joy.

Watch-Word: The Lord will keep us, as a shepherd keeps his flock.

Through His death on the cross, Jesus has given us life eternal and the power of darkness will have no grip on us if we hold unto the Lord firmly.
