A WORD FOR TODAY

It is evidently true that a team that loses concentration in a football match could possibly be defeated by their opponent. This is why it is said that, 'it is never over until it is over'.

The admonition of saint Paul to the Thessalonians in the first reading of today is something we must take to the heart, because if we fail to stay focused and at alert doing God's will, we may not be ready when the day of the Lord will come.

We are like players in a field playing to win a match, therefore, there is no time to waste or be distracted from our goal, mission and target which is heaven. We must live as children of the light and avoid works of darkness, because it will not help us to reach our destination.

We must place our trust in Jesus always because He is able to take care of us and help us to stay focused. The evil one can come to distract us from focusing on our mission and at such moment we must look up to Jesus to help us and to set us free as He did to the man in the gospel reading of today.

The authority of our Lord Jesus Christ to cast out demons and bring us salvation stems from His divinity as the incarnate Son of God. He has authority because He is God and does not subscribe to any other power to prove His authority. We must come to Him always because He can help us in our challenge and with Him all things are possible.

We must also learn from Him to use our positions and authority to help others get well and not to manipulate, intimidate or make them feel inferior. We must use our positions of authority to do good and not evil and by so doing we will be like Jesus who came that we may have life and have it abundantly.

Today we celebrate the memorial of saint Gregory the great. He was a monk and a pope who devoted his life in reforming the Church and propagating the Good News. He wrote extensively on pastoral care, spirituality and morals and designated himself as the 'servant of the servants of God'. Let us learn from Him to leave ourselves as instruments in God's hand so that He can make use of us for the good of humanity and glory of His name.

Stay focused and put your trust in Jesus and you will not be defeated in battle.
