A WORD FOR TODAY

CHOOSE LIGHT ABOVE DARKNESS

"And Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And he who sees me sees him who sent me. I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness." (John 12:44-46)_

When it comes to light, it is just something we cannot do without. Take for instance, how our heart is filled with joy when we get home after a hectic day and find out that we have light in the house. You are just happy at that moment, but in most cases, reverse will be the case when we return to the house and there is darkness.

Jesus stated the fact in the gospel reading that He is the light of the world and that anyone who believes in Him will not walk or remain in darkness. This means that the choice we make in life will definitely determine the side we belong, either on the side of light or darkness. If we belong to the light we must also aim to show Him to the world and people through us will also come to belong to the light.

To be in the light, we must be ready to grow in our faith experience and also share the faith we have received without being ashamed. We see in the first reading of today how the apostles while they were worshipping the Lord and keeping a fast, were instructed by the Holy spirit to set apart Paul and Barnabas for the task He has for them. Anyone who is in the light must love the gathering of the people of God, fasting and prayer and must be ready to obey the instruction of the Holy Spirit.

We must be instruments of light in the world just as Paul and Barnabas were chosen to be. We must go everywhere spreading the message of love and peace. The world needs our light to shine and when we fail to shine out as the light, we will become darkness and the devil can use us to deceive people and lead them astray. We must choose light over darkness, because Jesus is light and when we choose Him, we choose healing, salvation, mercy, forgiveness, breakthrough and protection.

To choose light above darkness you must be ready to reject anything that promotes the works of darkness. You may suffer as a result of your choice to follow Jesus the light, but you will be fulfilled, because Jesus will be your strength and consolation and in the end He will give you eternal life in His kingdom. We need to always pray and ask God for His guidance and be disposed to let Him make use of us where He wills so that our light will shine and many will come to believe in Him through us.
