A WORD FOR TODAY

The pharisees in the gospel reading of today said that Jesus was breaking the law by letting His disciples pluck some heads of grain to eat while walking through the grainfields. They focused on application of the law without considering the good of the persons whom these laws are meant for.

That the disciples plucked the corn to eat was not a crime, but because it was done on a sabbath. Jesus' response to the accusation of the Pharisees, was that in whatever we do, the good of the human person should come as a priority irrespective of what the law says. This means that if we are caught between obeying a regulation and saving a life, we should always place the latter before the former.

Jesus teaches us to be compassionate and merciful. He is not against obedience to the law of the land, but every law that is made should have the interest and good of the human person in view. We should obey the law always, but our obedience to the law should not make us to close our eyes and heart when we meet situations that will require us to do something that will save a life even when the law forbids that.

The disciples of Jesus must have been hungry and they were only acting to satisfy the basic need of hunger and that should not have been a problem if the Pharisees had looked deeply at the situation with compassion. However, because they were not happy with Jesus, they were always looking to find a fault with Him so as to hold Him liable of breaking the law of the land.

We must learn from this story not to be like the Pharisees who were only interested in finding fault with Jesus, but to be like Jesus who is interested in satisfying the need in the life of His disciples. He was compassionate and merciful and showed them love so that they will be strong to continue to proclaim the Good News. We must be firm, stable and steadfast in the practise of our faith always and it will help us to always do what will bring good to humanity and praise to God.

In everything we do, we must make sure that we place the good of the people before us above every selfish interest. If a law is made and it is against the good of the people, then we must choose to be on the side of the people than on the side of the law. Never close your eyes or harden your heart when you see people in need, put everything aside and help, because that is what Jesus will do if He is the one in the same situation like you.

In obeying the law make sure that the good of humanity takes precedence above everyother thing.
