A WORD FOR TODAY

The complaining attitude of the people of Israel was a contributing factor to why Moses could not enter the promised land. He acted against God's command and that cost him a lot. To be a leader is not an easy task, therefore we should always work hard to see that we contribute to what will make our leaders to serve us well and fulfil their mandate than what will make them lose control and miss the promised land.

We must try to use our time very wisely. Yes, we may have needs and we have right to make those responsible know about it, but we should also be contented with what we have so that our attitudes and actions does not become an act of ungratefulness before God and does not put undue pressure on our leaders which will make them to snap as it happened to Moses.

In the gospel reading of today we see Jesus call Peter the rock upon which the Church is built. His response when Jesus asked the question about Himself was very correct, because He let God speak through His heart. If we dispose ourselves well, we will be able to hear God's voice and do what He wants us to do.

We also see in the second part of the gospel that Peter's response to Jesus' words was not a good one and Jesus rebuked him, because at that time it was the voice of satan speaking through Peter. He was thinking as man that Jesus will not suffer but that is not God's way and will for Him.

We must learn to let the Lord have control over our heart and lips so that our thoughts and words will be in accordance to His will and will merit us blessings from Him. If we do not make a good discernment before we speak, we may end up being an instrument of obstruction in the hands of the evil one.

Today we celebrate the memorial of saint Dominic (1170-1221) He is the founder of the order of preachers (Dominicans). He spent his life proclaiming God's word and he laid a good example for others to follow. We must learn from him to practise self denial and use our sacrifices to do more good for the poor and needy in our world.
