A WORD FOR TODAY

THE WORLD NEEDS YOUR LIGHT TO SHINE

If you have never experienced darkness before, you will not appreciate what it means to be in the light. Darkness is killing and can make you feel depressed and troubled. Darkness can take away your joy and can bring frustration.

Jesus in the gospel reading of today mandates his disciples to shine out as the light and to be the salt of the earth. This means that we are to be the light that will radiate in the world so that people will not walk in darkness. We are to be the salt that will make the world tasty and whoever encounters us will testify that we belong to God.

To love Jesus and to be with Him is to be in the light and to be the light. To be the light of the world and the salt of the earth is to make a difference positively in such a way that people through us will come to experience the goodness and mercy of the Lord.

The prophet Isaiah in the first reading shows us a practical way to be the light of the world and salt of the earth. To be the light you must be ready to do something for the poor and the needy around you. You must make a positive impact in the hearts of men and women around you and you must let your work and activities make the world a better place.

You must share your bread with the hungry. Help the homeless to find a shelter, clothe the naked and be available and accessible to all those who will have a need for you, just as God is always there for you when you call and seek His face. Infact, everything about the corporal works of mercy we do is about being the light of the world. If you are not doing it yet, then you are still patronising darkness.

To be the light you must aim for righteousness and stay away from wickedness, pour out your life as food for the hungry and afflicted and you will be the source of healing for so many. The world needs your light to shine and if you do not shine, then you are contributing to the darkness of our world. Rise up, light up yourself in Christ and light up the world through your good works so that people will glorify your Father who is in Heaven.

Watch-Word: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven.

To shine as the light is the best way to bring glory to the name of the Lord.
