A WORD FOR TODAY

The action of Jesus in the gospel reading of today is one that shows us what it means to live a life that truly cares about the need of others. He was not deterred by the reaction of the scribes and the Pharisees, instead He healed the man whose right hand was withered and restored him.

The Scribes and the Pharisees observed the law of the Sabbath, but they do it without considering what its true meaning is. They will not help the needy or allow them to be helped because it is a Sabbath and helping them will be doing a work which is totally forbidden, but Jesus in His action had to let them know that the Sabbath which is a holy day of the Lord should be used to do good and save life and not to do harm to people.

As children of God we must be conscious of our calling and make effort always to use every opportunity at our disposal to do good and glorify the name of the Lord. God is praised and happy when we use our gifts to bring good to others especially those who are in need. It does not matter where and when, but what is important is that a good is done to the glory of the lord and for the good of humanity.

Our task everyday will be to do God's will and to let His love move us to show love to the sick, hungry, imprisoned, wounded, abandoned, aged and less privileged. We must fight for their cause and do all we can to help them, because in helping them we are praising the name of the Lord.

It will become wickedness on our part when we fail to do good to those in need, because of the law we intend to observe. Infact, any law that does not place priority of the good of the human person, above everything else can never be a good law and Jesus has shown it by healing a man on a Sabbath. The Pharisees became angry by His action, but Jesus was not disturbed, because He has saved a life and has done good to someone in need and that is all that matters.

We must not love our rules and regulations above God. We must be ready to do what God wants and that will be to always act with love and mercy when we meet those in need. We must help them and in helping them we are praising God who has given us the gift to do what we have done. It is indeed lawful on a Sabbath to do good and save life and not do harm and destroy it.
