A WORD FOR TODAY
The first reading of today presents us with the encounter Abraham had with the angels who were on their way to destroy the city of sodom and Gomorrah, because of their evil deeds. When he got the news of what the intent of the angels were he did not hesitate to intercede on their behalf and begged God to spare the city.
It shows how good Abraham is, he did not bear grudges for his brother Lot who was living in that city, but kept interceding for that city until Lot and his family was spared from the disaster that befell that nation.
We must always strive to pay back evil with good just as Jesus did to those who persecuted Him. He interceded for them and obtained forgiveness for them from the Father who is compassionate and gracious.
This is what it means to follow Jesus, we must be ready to show love to those who have hurt us and forgive them. We must not be revengeful, but helpful to those who have done us harm. We must forgive them and do good to them. We must stand in the gap between them and God and obtain God's blessings and mercy for them through our intercession.
The righteousness of one man can save a whole city and God expects us to live good lives so as to experience His peace and blessings in abundance. Sin brings us down, but righteousness exalts us. God is holy and as we strive to follow Him we must make honest and sincere effort to be like Him in holiness and goodness.
